These new rules were designed to reduce net migration into the UK after statistics showed that the net migration of people to the UK in the year ending December 2022 was 745,000. Also, there was a net migration figure of 672,000 in June 2023 year ending.

For this reason, the UK conservative-led government through James Cleverly, the UK Home Secretary, introduced a 5-point plan to curb net immigration into the country. Some of the rules include raising the minimum income requirement for a Skilled Worker visa from £26,200 to £38,700 to ensure that only higher-skilled workers can enter the country via the Skilled Worker visa. 

Another rule is to stop international students and care workers from bringing their dependent family members through Civil partnership visa UK and other Family visa types and more. As these new immigration rules have been implemented, they will drastically reduce net migration figures in the UK. Although the UK government hopes to boost the economy through these new immigration rules by prioritising highly skilled workers, they will make the UK less attractive and reduce the influx of immigrants into the country.
